Operations
Introduction
The operations function in a business is responsible for all the operations
that go into making the product.
A number of things go in (inputs) >>> a series of operations takes place
(production or processing) >>> and something is made (a product).
Every business needs a set of inputs. It is the job of the functional area that
covers operations to make sure that there are enough of the inputs, and that they
are of sufficient quality. Part of the operations function will also be to
organise and oversee the actual production process.
Operations produces products by making best use of the various inputs that are
needed.
These are:
- Land - This includes land that is worked (such as agricultural land, mines and
quarries), the land that is needed for buildings to stand on, and the buildings
themselves. For Cameron Balloons, this is the two factory sites, in the UK and
the United States.
- Equipment - Cameron Balloons has computer and design equipment, machines for
sewing fabric and specialist plotting and cutting machines.
- People - The staff at Cameron Balloons range from Don Cameron himself, to
engineers, designers and salespeople. You will meet many of the staff on the
virtual tour of the factory.
- Materials - The raw materials needed include the special fabric used to make the
balloons, the means to put the designs on to the fabric, and the materials to
make the baskets, burners and rigging.
Operations covers such a wide area that, in many businesses, it is divided
into different specialist departments. In Cameron balloons, you can find out
