Read A Day in the Life of the Production Manager (courtesy of Biz/ed).

The person we are going to focus on in the production area is Dave McGibbon.

Dave McGibbon

Dave is the joint production manager. He works for Jim Howard who is the production manager. Dave is responsible for five different areas of production:

  • Graphic Design Design studio
    • Graphic design has 4 people working in it
    • Dave's main contact here is Chris Leaman
    • The picture shows David Reed using a CAD package

  • Plotting Template cutter
    • Craig Moore looks after the plotting and has trained up several members of staff.

  • Planning Planning
    • Planning has 2 people working there
    • The main person that Dave liaises with is Andrew Futter

  • Spraying Spraying
    • There are 2 sprayers doing the airbrush painting
    • The main person that Dave liaises with is Sian Jones

  • Artwork Artwork
    • The artwork section has 3 people in it
    • The main person that Dave liaises with is Ian Lewis.

For a bit more about the "span of control" and "organisation charts" why not look at the human resource management worksheet?

Dave is a tremendous enthusiast about balloons and all aspects of ballooning and has spent much of his working life working for Cameron's.

Dave's time each day is split between various areas, including:

  • costing artworks for new visuals that will become hot air balloons
  • day to day management of production and ensuring that the process carries on as efficiently as possible
  • scheduling
  • planning
  • looking after his staff - resolving problems, introducing ideas from experience, monitoring their work, planning schedules and so on
  • research and development in the fabric and artwork techniques

What should Dave's main priorities for each day be?
